evil demons!…RED BEANS AT THE READY!!
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese festival which marks the beginning of Spring and New Year.
Bean Throwing, known as Mamemaki in Japanese, is an important part of Setsubun. It is supposed to purify the evils of the last year, drive out the demons, and bring in good spirits and good luck in the coming year.
Children chase the evil spirits through the tiny back roads and side streets and then pelt them with red beans!
